Glossary of Web Hosting Terms

Learn more about some of those confusing web hosting terms that appear like a foreign language to normal users.

Active Server Pages (ASP)
A server-side scripting language from Microsoft that allows the creation of dynamically generated content. VBScript of JScript is the coding language that is used.

Apache
Open source web server platform. The most common platform used today. It is generally used with Unix and Linux operating systems.

Bandwidth
Measurement of website traffic to and from a site. Usually measured in Megabytes (MB).

CGI
Common Gateway Interface. A server side script that allows dynamic content to be displayed. Usually coded in PERL.

Cookie
A text file stored on your computer that holds information from a website you have visited.

Dedicated Web Hosting
An entire web server is allocated for your application or website. You get all of the server resources since you are not sharing it with other sites or applications. See shared web hosting.

FTP
File Transfer Protocol. Common method of sending and receiving files across the internet from one web server to another.

HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language. Most common programming language used for web sites. Once coded, a web browser will interpret the code and then display a web page.

IIS
Internet Information Services or Internet Information Server. Microsoft's web server operating system.

Managed Hosting
Usually used along with a dedicated server, managed hosting means that the dedicated server company normally maintains the web server.

Reseller Hosting
A hosting plan or package that allows you to sell or resell parts of your web space and traffic to other users.

Shared Hosting
Your site resides on a server with other websites and you are therefore "sharing" the server with other users. See Dedicated Hosting.

SQL Server
A robust database server technology from Microsoft.

UNIX
Operating system used on computers. Most usually used on servers and web servers.

Virtual Private Server (VPS)
A hosting plan that allows you to share greater resources of a dedicated server. The server is partitioned into dedicated spaces. The space and resources allocated is somewhere between a Shared hosting account and a dedicated server account. See Shared Hosting and Dedicated Hosting.
